The Blanche D. Calloway Foundation, Inc. was founded to honor acclaimed trailblazing bandleader, jazz musician, political activist, community organizer, and entrepreneur -- the late
Blanche Dorothea Calloway.
Blanche Calloway was the older sister of world renown, singer, and star of stage and screen --
Cab Calloway.
Blanche Calloway was the aunt of the Foundation's Board Chair, CEO, and joint-founder, Dr. Mike Monroe.
Over the years, perceptive counsel and teaching from "Aunt Blanche" became a major inspirational force in Dr. Monroe's life.
In 1978, shortly after the death of Blanche Calloway, Dr. Monroe discovered that he was a major benificiary. All titles to all works held by and in the name of Blanche Dorothea Calloway had been willed to Dr. Michael Calloway Monroe.
Now, within him, Blanche Calloway's dynamism survives long after her death, and for him -- in spirit -- Blanche Calloway significantly influenced the creation and development of this Foundation, as well as the creation of The BDC Foundation sister organization -- Socio-Economic Empowerment through Democracy Development Group, Inc. (SDG).
SDG is the nonprofit organization that created the Blanche Calloway Café of the Arts franchise.
Sponsorship of the Blanche Calloway Café of the Arts franchise has been transfered from SDG to The BDC Foundation.
